MES Robotics Team – TEAM BURNOUT
MES Robotics team gave presentation at the SCC Meeting about traffic concerns in the Moanalua Community.
Critical Incident at MES (T. Ushijima)
Discussion held about guidance incident on 11/10/09. Dr. Teri Ushijima (Complex Area Superintendant) and Dr. Joe Acklin (State School Psychologist) were in attendance to address concerns.
T. Ushijima explained that both the incident and the handling of the incident are under investigation, and therefore none of the details were to be discussed. There were several parent concerns voiced, as follows:
1) Why is this investigation taking so long? Why did it take so long (and news involvement) for the parents to find out what happened to their kids? (no clear answer given, other than there is a process)
2) Can we have a debrief meeting after the investigation is complete to learn what we can about the incident as well as any changes to how the school will handle future incidents? (administration to consider this)
3) What assurance do we have that this was an isolated incident
4) How are the traumatized children getting support? (DOE behavioral health support to meet with children in groups to screen for PTSD/trauma, and then individualize treatment)
5) Parents would like to hear an apology from the school on their perceived mishandling of this incident
6) A question of parent notification policy in the event of a child being involved in bullying/incidents...Dr. Ushijima notes that parents should be notified.
7) A suggestion was made to send out US mail letters for secure delivery in the future for important matters, as going home with the children is not reliable. For critical incidents, phone calls may be appropriate.
Several concerns were stated. SCC would like to remind everyone to please continue to let your legislators and the administration hear about your concerns.
